William Street/ Charlton Street

Princeton, NJ

This project was an extensive renovation of an existing, two-family property comprised of a 150-year-old duplex residence and detached, 75-year-old, two-unit apartment.  Located on a narrow, L-shaped .08-acre site, bordering Princeton University campus, the 1,500 SF main structure and 880 SF apartment required extensive foundation/ framing repair, followed by new construction throughout. The main building was converted to a single-family residence and the apartment serves as a design studio.

Due to zoning non-compliance for both structures, exterior walls and roof lines/angles could not be moved, raised or altered, without seeking multiple zoning variances. Maintaining existing exterior footprints, entirely new structures were created from the inside, out. The post and beam main house is clad in stucco and western red cedar and features a new glass and cedar stair tower. The detached studio is clad in cedar over the original concrete block. All windows and exterior doors are custom, aluminum. Main house roof is standing seam aluminum. Apartment roof (minimal slope roof) is rubber. Both roofs are slated for solar panels or planting in the coming year. This project was completed in June 2020.
